Stiftung Landwirtschaftsverlag promotes vegetable growing at Pascal-Gymnasium Münster
Together with the GemüseAckerdemie planting team, pupils and teachers from Pascal-Gymnasium Münster sowed seeds of stubble turnip and radishes, among other things, and planted tomatoes and zucchinis in their own beds. The high school is thus starting its first field season! “Over the next few weeks, the pupils will look after the growing vegetables in regular field lessons,” explains Jens Möller, a teacher at Pascal-Gymnasium. In this way, they will learn in a very practical way where our food comes from, get to know classic and new vegetable varieties such as palm kale and learn, for example, that year-round mulching makes the soil fertile.
The educational program is implemented by Acker e. V. The social enterprise aims to permanently anchor nature-based learning spaces in everyday education at schools and daycare centers in order to get young people excited about healthy eating and sustainability. “The GemüseAckerdemie enables pupils at Pascalgymnasium to experience the subject of school gardening in the spirit of resource-conserving and sustainable vegetable cultivation with practical assistance and educational materials,” say Pia and David from Acker e.V., describing the educational approach. The pupils grow up to 30 types of vegetables and learn about many new varieties, such as yellow and curly beet in addition to the classic beet. In addition to the educational materials, a planting workshop and supervised planting sessions help school garden teachers to enrich the subject of school gardening with lots of practical knowledge and also to get other teachers, school staff and parents interested in the school garden.
The GemüseAckerdemie educational materials are based on the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Over 1,800 learning spaces have already been created in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the financial support of numerous funding partners.
The Stiftung Landwirtschaftsverlag is supporting the GemüseAckerdemie educational program at Pascal-Gymnasium Münster for four years. “We want to make our contribution to giving children more knowledge about and appreciation for food,” says Malte Schwerdtfeger, Chairman of the Stiftung Landwirtschaftsverlag, describing the motives behind the financial support. Acker e.V. honored the commitment of the Stiftung Landwirtschaftsverlag on site at the Pascal-Gymnasium with a small award.
