Trade magazine Lebensmittel Praxis honors the best German markets.
E-Center Penzberg (Upper Bavaria), Globus Markthalle in Koblenz, Edeka Prechtl in Bad Aibling and Rewe Stenten in Aachen are the four Supermarkets of the Year 2025. The award for the four best stores in German food retailing was presented today, Thursday, in Essen by Lebensmittel Praxis, the highest-circulation trade magazine for the German food industry. The winning stores impressed a high-caliber jury of experts with their creativity and surprising ideas, quality awareness and, above all, customer proximity - as well as outstanding sales.
Lebensmittel Praxis has also named “Employee of the Year” in the food retail sector. This year's special prizes went to Enis Canaz (Marktkauf Knödgen in Recklinghausen), Nina Krämer (Stiegler Einkaufszentrum in Speyer) and Manuela Markert (Globus Markthalle in Zell an der Mosel).
'Customers should feel comfortable in ‘their’ supermarket. Shopping should be as stress-free an experience as possible. Then they will come back. A high level of customer convenience, the best product quality and convincing value for money: this is what distinguishes the top food retail stores and is always a team effort. The winners of the ‘Supermarket of the Year’ and ‘Employee of the Year’ competitions are emphatic proof of this again this year. We can all learn from this,' says Dr. Ludger Schulze Pals, Managing Director of Lebensmittel Praxis Verlag, highlighting the benefits of the competition.
The Supermarket of the Year award is presented by Lebensmittel Praxis in four categories: chain stores with up to 3,000 square meters of retail space, chain stores with over 3,000 square meters of retail space, independent stores with up to 2,000 square meters of retail space and independent stores with over 2,000 square meters of retail space. The jury consists of experts and high-ranking managers from the food industry as well as top decision-makers from the largest German retail companies. Among them are the heads of Edeka and Rewe, Markus Mosa and Lionel Souque.
Three stores are nominated for the final selection in each category. The pre-selection is made by the editors of Lebensmittel Praxis. For this purpose, it examines all incoming applications in detail and incognito. At the same time, an independent market research institute surveys consumers in the relevant markets. The research and analysis results also form the basis for the jury's decision.

The industry celebrated the Supermarkets of the Year for the fifth time in the Grand Hall of the Zeche Zollverein in Essen. The food for the after-show party was created by the chefs of media partner essen & trinken. Like Lebensmittel Praxis, the title belongs to the Landwirtschaftsverlag publishing group.
During the day, around 450 interested parties took part in the congress program of the industry get-together. Two major questions were at the center of the discussion: New federal government equals less bureaucracy - does this formula work? And what are successful approaches to finding and retaining good employees? The numerous experts and speakers included Lionel Souque, CEO of the Rewe Group, Josef Hovenjürgen, Parliamentary State Secretary for the Ruhr region in the Ministry for Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Digitalization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Ernst Läuger, Vice President of the German Retail Association HDE, and Prof. Dr. Katharina Reuter, Managing Director of the German Sustainable Business Association. They were joined in discussion by experts from the field, such as David Hegemann, Rewe Hegemann, Ulrike Jakobi-Schlimme from Jakobi Lebensmittel and the two founders Cathy Hutz, Vice President of Product at Infinite Roots, and Dr. Pasi Vainikka, Member of the Board at Solar Foods.
